About the Event

As critical the Internet has become to our daily survival, so is the necessity to further prioritize the issues around online safety and security. According to the outcome of recent research carried out by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa - UNECA, titled "Cybersecurity for Development in the 4th Industrial Revolution", it becomes clearer that the rate at which cybersecurity impact on the development of an economy, continues to grow rapidly. The importance of online security is made evident as there is a huge increase in the investment and adoption of technology, and the Internet, most especially in sectors like health, Commerce, Finance, Agriculture, Education, etc. and such exponential growth can only be sustained when there is an assurance of the same measure of safety, transparency, and accountability.

The research which was conducted in 40 African nations (including 12 from West Africa) showed that an increase of Cybersecurity maturity by 10% yields between 0.66% and 5.4% increase in per capita GDP in Africa. It was noted that the higher a nation’s cybersecurity maturity, the lower the cyber financial loss per capita. Data from a sample size of the 40 nations under review also showed that a 10% rise in Internet Penetration enables between 1% and 8.2% increase in GDP per capita in Africa. The report also indicated that Africa’s cybersecurity maturity is 29.1% compared to that of Latin America and Asia/Middle-East at 35.6% and 61% respectively.

The 11th Quarterly eConference of Africa ICT Alliance - AfICTA would examine "Cybersecurity in West Africa: Exploring the UNECA Insight" whereby the discussion would be geared toward the importance of; 1. Awareness creation, 2. Investing heavily in Cybersecurity architecture, 3. Encouraging cybersecurity career uptake 4. Promoting cybersecurity best practices, 5. Conducting regular cybersecurity training and 6. Managing/reporting breaches when they happen.  Click below for further details…
