On 24 March 2022, AfICTA in collaboration with the Kemitel S.A organized the 1st edition of its Quarterly webinar for 2022 on "Cryptocurrencies in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities".The event provided a platform for professionals from across Africa to discuss issues surrounding the regulation of cryptocurrency in the region highlighting the vast opportunities that could be beneficial to the economic landscape and proffering recommendations on a suitable regulatory framework for the Cryptocurrency market.

MTN Joins Global Organisations to Strengthen Child Online Safety in Africa

MTN Group has joined forces with several global organisations, including the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) Meta, ICMEC (the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children) and Child Helpline International, to launch the Help Children be Children campaign and the Child Safety Online Africa Portal.

Namibia Suspends Awarding New Telecommunications Licences

The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) says it will temporarily suspend the awarding of new telecommunications and broadcasting service licences from 1 October 2022 until 30 September 2023. 

 

CRAN said it wants to use this period to conduct a market research study on fixed data sets linked to licences currently in the market. CredPal, a Nigerian startup, Has Raised $15 Million in Funding to Expand its BNPL Model Across Africa

CredPal, a Nigerian “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) firm, has received US$15 million to extend its consumer loan operations in Nigeria and beyond Africa.

 

The bridge round included existing investors such as Greenhouse Capital, as well as new investors such as Uncovered Fund, LongCommerce, First Circle Capital, and Adii Pienaar, co-founder and former CEO of WooCommerce. A small number of financial firms supplied the debt facility.

The Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Innovation of Rwanda, in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF), have launched the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) in Rwanda.

Waspito, a Cameroonian e-Health Startup, Has Raised $2.7 Million in Seed Funding

Waspito, a Cameroonian e-health firm, has acquired US$2.7 million in seed capital to expand its user base in Cameroon and into Ivory Coast.

 

An oversubscribed US$2.7 million seed investment led by Launch Africa Ventures, Newtown Partners via the Imperial Venture Fund, BLOC Smart Africa managed by Bamboo Capital Partners, Orange Ventures, Saviu Ventures, Plug and Play, and BringCom will fund the first stage of this development, which will see the company expand its coverage across Cameroon and launch in Ivory Coast.

Telecom Egypt Secures €150m Loan to Expand Network

Telecom Egypt has signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to secure a loan of €150-million to expand its 4G broadband network. 

 

According to EIB, the operator plans to use the money to open a new development facility that will be used to deploy 2, 000 new mobile sites to upgrade coverage and installing additional capacity layers to its existing portfolio of mobile towers.

Togolese Govt Looks to Spearhead Fibre Optic Deployment with €300m Investment

The Togolese government wants to borrow €300-million to drive deployment of fibre optic infrastructure and expand broadband coverage. This comes a week after the country connected to Google’s Equiano submarine cable, which is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of this year.

Visa has opened a new Innovation Studio in Nairobi, its first dedicated innovation site in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
