AfICTA Chairman Speaks @ the AfIGF 2019 - Chad


Engr. Hossam Elgamal, the Chairman of AfICTA - Africa ICT Alliance speaks @ the high-level panel session of the 8th Meeting of the African Internet Governance Forum AfIGF which was hosted by the Chadian government @ N'Djamena from 10-12 September 2019.

 

This year edition of the forum focused on “Shared Responsibilities of Stakeholders for a Robust Ecosystem of Internet Governance” and was attended by over 300 participants from government, private sector, academia, research institutions, technical community, media and civil society organizations.

 

At the end of the high-level panel session discussion, the following recommendations were made by AfICTA Chairman:

1. There should be a transition from a telecommunications regulator to a regulator for society and the digital economy.

2. There should be the creation of a forum for digital technology industry development bodies in the countries of the continent to share challenges, development plans, experiences, and projects.

3. There should be a consideration for more representatives of different development sectors in the light of sustainable development plans 2030 in the Internet Governance Forum for further awareness and discussion of appropriate regulatory policies for digital transformation in each sector

4. Working a digital portal assembled in collaboration with Smart Africa and AfICTA to provide the necessary information on the stimulating environment, projects, strategies, policies, and points of contact for digital transformation in different African countries

 

The forum ended with award ceremony by the African Union, the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the Government of Chad recognizing the outstanding contribution of Makane Faye, Moctar Yedaly and Ridha Guellouz for their contributions to the Internet development in Africa.

AfICTA Signs  MoU with ACT USA

AfICTA - Africa ICT Alliance has finalized all the process with signing a memorandum of understanding with ACT (Association for Competitive Technology) - the App Association, an association that represents more than 5,000 app companies and information technology firms across the mobile economy. The process took 2 months as both parties reviewed the benefits that the mutual collaboration tends to bring.

The MoU aims at establishing collaborative efforts towards achieving AfICTA and ACT common objective of advocacy at the public level to the realization of the SDGs by 2030. The MoU would have both parties work on a public-private partnership that would enhance and provide policies aimed at providing an enabling environment for ICT to thrive effectively in Africa and beyond.

ACT | The App Association (ACT) which is  located  @ Washington DC, in United States  advocates for an environment that inspires and rewards innovation, while providing the necessary resources to help their members to leverage their intellectual assets to raise capital, create jobs, and continue innovating, and Africa Information & Communication Technologies Alliance (AfICTA) is located in Abuja, Nigeria is a concerned private sector led alliance of ICT Associations, Multi-national Corporations, Companies, Organizations and individuals in the ICT sector in Africa with membership in more than 30-Nations in Africa including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Namibia, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

AfICTA Proposal Selected among other Proposals for the 14th IGF Meeting in Berlin

 

 

The outcome of the workshop proposal review and selection process conducted by IGF- Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Group (IGF-MAG) on overall 431 submitted workshop proposals, has revealed that approximately 60 proposals have sailed through among which is AfICTA proposal "#293 Unlocking the Digital Potential of the DLDC Countries".

According to the group, MAG's selection process this year looked at proposals' cohesion with one another under each of the three major themes for 2019: Data Governance; Digital Inclusion; and Safety, Security, Stability & Resilience. With a view to creating thematic tracks and reducing overall redundancy, the number of selected workshops was limited to approximately 20 per theme.

The Fourteenth Annual Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will be hosted by the Government of Germany in Berlin from 25 to 29 November 2019 under the overarching theme: One World. One Net. One Vision. Participants who are willing to attend but require funding support are to apply here on or before Sunday 30th June, 2019.

AfICTA Welcomes ATCON New Representative to its Board

Africa Information and Communication Technologies Alliance - AfICTA formally welcomed ATCON’s (Association for Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria) newly nominated representative, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani to its Board during the 9th edition of its monthly online board meeting that was held on the 5th of September, 2019 and attended by members from South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Sudan, Cote d’Ivoire...

The nomination was made by ATCON’s National Executive Council - NEC and communicated to AfICTA Secretariat. Prior to this nomination, ATCON was ably represented by Dr. Anthony Nwosu, CEO of Astongate Consult and Chairman, Global Access Technologies who was also ATCON 1st Vice President during his tenure and bowed out with remarkable achievements due to his relentless support and contributions in various activities within AfICTA ecosystem.

AfICTA Participates Actively in the AUC Train the Trainers Workshop

AfICTA - Africa ICT Alliance is currently being represented by 6 IT Business Experts from the 5 regions of Africa @ the ongoing AUC Train the Trainers Workshop organized by the African Union Commission as part of its "Policy and Regulation Initiative for Digital Africa (PRIDA)" initiative. 

African Union earlier invited AfICTA as the representative of the African ICT Business and AfICTA in response sent her prominent ICT business experts which include: Hossam Ragheb (Egypt), Assangbe Wotto Gbentonji Vivien (Benin Rep), Ulandi Exner (South Africa), Inye Kemabonta (Nigeria), Caroline Kirichu (Kenya), and Bambo Samuel (Cameroon) coming from the five African regions (North, West, Southern, West, East and Central Africa respectively) to attend.

According to the African Union Commission, the overall objective of the PRIDA is to foster universally accessible, affordable and effective wireless broadband-across the continent to unlock possible future benefits of Internet-based services.

The workshop being hosted @ the AUC headquarters in Addis-Ababa is expected to last for 5 days and commenced on Monday 27th May with deep reflection on issues pertaining to Internet Governance, Network and Infrastructure, Security, Human Rights, Legal, Economic, Sociocultural, Development, and Institutions and multi-stakeholder partnerships/engagements.

Reflecting on the outcome of the sessions, Inye Kemabonta reported that the first day covered concepts, historical perspectives, regulation, and infrastructure of the Internet. He mentioned how important it is to promote African perspectives and to have our own histories written by us.

The second day was a practicum session with a group chaired by one of the delegates from AfICTA, Hossam Ragheb the group examined some of the issues from the first day with countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa as case studies.

The workshop dived deeper on the third day focusing on the legal and regulatory frameworks for Internet governance with Cybersecurity session that opened participants' minds to some important assertions. The day's engagement was closed with a practicum on critical infrastructure.
